The second edition of Universiada, a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education competition was recently carried out in partnership with the Association of Chemical Industry Engineers and Technicians and the University of Wrocław.
Universiada 2024: Igniting STEM Passion in Poland’s Young Minds
Funded with community engagement grant from PPG, Universiada aims to inspire and encourage young people’s interest in science. The competition is open to students aged 10-14 in Poland, who work in teams of a maximum of five on a chemistry projects under the supervision of a teacher or guardian, then present the results to a jury of experts, including PPG representatives.
Marcin Sobczyk, vice-dean for Innovation and Development at the Faculty of Chemistry, praised Universiada for its role in promoting science and inspiring young researchers to delve into diverse knowledge areas. He added, “Universiada not only fosters scientific values and educates future generations of scientists, but it also strengthens the bond between the university and the community. The enthusiastic and creative young participants can bring forward innovative ideas and solutions that contribute to societal and economic progress.”
Maria Bogdańska emphasized the importance of promoting science among young people for the future development of various sectors, including industry. “Initiatives like Universiada allow us to effectively inspire the next generations to pursue their scientific passions and talents. We aim to pique the interest of young people in science and potential STEM careers early in their education.”
Here are the winning projects of the 2nd edition:
- First Prize - Bioplastics from Agar-Agar: Primary School No. 8 in Oława explored bioplastics and discovered that one made from agar-agar, derived from seaweed, could replace hydrocarbon-based plastics. This project was inspired by the World Earth Day theme "Planet vs. Plastic."
- Second Prize - Optimal Blend of Biofuels for Steam Engines: Mysłakowice Primary School found an optimal biofuel blend for steam engines, showing how renewable energy can be integrated into 19th-century technology for future use.
