OEM Paint Processes

Pre-treatment and Painting

Today's vehicles are manufactured from a wide variety of materials, including:

  • Aluminium
  • Steel
  • Galvanised steel
  • Magnesium
  • Plastics

Various coatings are applied to these substrates, with each layer performing a particular task.

OEM Paint Layers

Paint layering system

A paint finish consists of three key layers:

  • Primer coat
  • Filler/intermediate coat
  • Topcoat (water or solvent-based paint and clearcoat)

OEM Paint-Drying Process

  • A high temperature (approximately 140°C) drying process after application ensures that the coat is chemically cross-linked and workable, i.e. that it can be sanded.
  • The Intermediate drying process, or 'flash-off', is the time in which liquid components evaporate before further coats are applied.

Pre-Treatment

  • Primarily serves to ensure good adhesion to the substrate.
