A Full House of PPG Finishes for Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to Enhance, Protect and Cool

Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas hosts some of the world's most prominent sporting events and the biggest headliners in entertainment.

Located right behind the famous Strip, the state-of-the-art facility opened in 2020 with a construction price tag of $1.9 billion, making it one of the world’s most expensive stadiums to build.

While the 10-level fully domed venue has exceeded expectations by nearly every metric, its construction came with some formidable challenges, including its sheer size at 1.8 million square feet and 28,000 tons of structural steel, to its setting in the searing sun and heat of the Mojave Desert.

PPG protects and beautifies the Allegiant Stadium

Through a partnership with the Las Vegas Raiders, PPG paints , coatings and specialty materials played a central role in the design and construction of the extraordinary facility, thanks to solutions that balanced the need for high-end aesthetics fitting of its location near the Vegas Strip with durable, long-lasting protection for interior, exterior and structural steel surfaces.

PPG's Industrial Coatings business formulated the team's signature black and silver colors in PPG DURANAR® coatings for the venue's glittering curtainwall. Based on PPG's proprietary 70% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) formulation, the four-layer coating system delivered excellent abrasion and chemical resistance and will retain its vivid color after decades of exposure in the intense desert sun.

For the project, PPG also leveraged advanced coatings infused with infrared (IR) reflective pigments that help to cool the climate-controlled building with less energy since they have a higher degree of total solar reflective (TSR) value than standard protective solutions. These technologies also help to preserve the structural integrity of the stadium by reducing corrosion, warping, thermal expansion and polymer degradation.

Three years after its nationally televised debut, the LEED Gold Certified venue continues to exceed expectations.

Nearly two million people visit the facility each year for professional and collegiate football games, special events and headlining concerts. Just two years after opening, it became one of the biggest draws in Las Vegas. Billboard named it the Top Venue in the World in 2022.
