This standard operating procedure (SOP) discusses the proper procedure for identifying proper color formulas. Before beginning any repair, it is important to always wear the recommended safety protection required for the job.

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Obtain OEM Color Code from the vehicle.
Determine if the repair/blend area has been previously refinished. Reference a color chip book or wall poster for color code locations on various vehicles. PPG has paint code location available for download at: www.ppgrefinish.com>Training> OEM Color Code Locations Guide. - Look up OEM Color Code:
In PPG Paint Manager XI®, find the color formula number. For variant colors available for Honda, if the paint code and 11th digit are unsuccessful, use the percent sign (%), i.e, (NH700M%) as a wild card character for searches. - Check variant colors using PPG Chromatic Color Deck or spray out card from a personal library nearest to the area to be painted on the vehicle. When evaluating for a color match, use natural sunlight, color-corrected lights, or handheld portable color matching light. Polish the adjacent panel(s) to choose a prime or variant color with the best blendable match.
- Mix color:
- If a color match is verified, mix enough color for the whole job. Refer to volume estimator to calculate how much paint to mix. Continue with the refinishing process.
- If the color match is suspicious, mix a small amount of basecoat color on the scale to make a spray out card, (mix 66 parts or 68 grams or 1.8 ounces per ARMC XXX spray out card).
- Paint a spray out card while edging parts if possible.
Refer to PD-0632 CREATE SPRAY OUT CARD. - When a blendable color match is verified, mix enough basecoat color for the entire repair.
