PD-0520: Primer Surfacer Application

This standard operating procedure (SOP) covers the process for applying a primer surfacer during a repair. Before beginning any repair, it is important to always wear the recommended safety protection required for the job.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. A technician should review a work order to ensure that all parts to be painted are present and repairs are understood.
  2. Mask as necessary according to PD-0300 VEHICLE MASKING.
  3. Clean the area for the Primer Surfacer application with a regionally approved surface cleaner. An option for cleaning an area containing body, or glaze filler will be to use a tack rag or apply a light amount of SX103 / SXA103 MULTI-PREP™ on the filler is preferred. Dry SX103 / SXA103 or surface cleaner with a clean cloth. Follow local VOC regulated rules, for not all areas allow the use of certain surface cleaners.
  4. If a Primer Surfacer is to be applied over fiberglass, plastic, or sheet molded compound (SMC) repair, the surface must be cleaned with SX103 / SXA103 MULTI-PREP™ only. Follow local VOC regulated rules, for not all areas allow the use of certain surface cleaners.
  5. If any bare metal is exposed, an Etch Primer, chemical metal treatment, or Epoxy Primer is recommended before the Primer Surfacer application.
  6. Mix and apply the Primer Surfacer according to the Product Data Sheet. Apply Primer Surfacer using the reverse prime technique. Apply Primer Surfacer slightly beyond the edges of the repair area. Allow each coat of Primer Surfacer to flash completely before applying the next coat.
  7. If not using Primer-Sealer in the painting process, mix the Primer Surfacer in the correct gray, G1-G7 or SG01-SG07 recommended for the color code.
  8. Allow Primer Surfacer to air dry or force dry according to the Product Data Sheet instructions before sanding.
